Brochure/Poster
Independent Lens is a documentary series that explores current social issues. A 33×22-inch poster is designed to also function as a 12-page French-fold self-cover brochure when cut and bound with staples. The design must use only two colors and feature imagery exclusively from the series, formatted as offset lithography.
Brochure
TypographyShima, a revival typeface inspired by the letterforms of Hiroshima—a poster designed by Wim Crouwel in 1957—by Nate Navasca, delivers a striking sense of directness and impact with its bold, extremely condensed design.
The secondary typeface, Helvetica Neue, complements the sense of urgency by ensuring straightfoward legibility, respecting the body copy with its clean design.
Color PaletteThe poster/brochure predominantly uses red, a midtone to emphasize urgency and danger, drawing immediate attention and evoking a strong emotional response.
Image TreatmentA single image of a child looking up symbolizes both hope and loss simultaneously, embodying the overarching themes of the series, while repetitive bitmap lines replicates the texture of a digital screen.
